When starting the process, you will need the following documentation to renew your Italian passport:
A form of valid photo ID- this can be a national ID card, driving license or equivalent, or your current passport (even if it has expired).
If aged 16 or 17, a parental awareness form will need to be completed.
If you are over the age of 16 and your passport was issued within the last 15 years, you will also need to complete a DS-82 or DS-11 form.
Applications to renew passports can either be processed through the post or in person. It is important to remember that it will take time to process the documents, so ensure your application for a passport is not left to the last minute when planning a trip. It is possible to renew your Italian passport six months before it is due to expire.
After you have completed the passport renewal application, you would need to make an appointment with your local Italian Consulate. You can do this in Milan, Naples, Rome, or Florence. You must book with a consulate in the jurisdiction in which you reside in.
To renew through the post, you will need an Italian postal address and will also need to be located in Italy at the time of submission.
Once this has been done, you can then send your application for review at your local Italian Consulate.

In order to check the status of your renewal application for your Italian passport, you will need to visit interno.gov and go to the "citizenship" section. There is a link where you can check the application once you have filled in the prompts requesting your details.
